BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is necessary and fundamental for everyone who wants to follow the Lord Jesus and gain eternal life. This point cannot be viewed as a “bonus” or “addition” to faith! The Bible says explicitly that whoever does not have the Holy Spirit does not belong to God, and that unless someone is born again of the Spirit, he will not enter the Kingdom of God. Not every person has the Holy Spirit – “because so”, “because he believes it”, “because was baptized as a baby”, “because had confirmation”, “because asked”. Proclamation of faith or rite does not guarantee the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We want to convince every believer that he should continue to searching and asking God for the Holy Spirit, if he has not yet been baptized with it.

THE LORD JESUS BAPTIES WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
[Luke 3:16 NKJV]

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD JESUS

 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ;
[Philippians 1:19 NKJV]

searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
[1 Peter 1:11 NKJV]

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
[John 4:24 NKJV]

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
[2 Cor 3:17-18 NKJV]

ABOUT BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Pan Jezus wskazał nam drogę będąc ochrzczonym w wodzie i Duchem Świętym. *Pan Jezus nie musiał być ochrzczony tym chrztem co my ponieważ począł się z Ducha Świętego – bez skazy i nie znaleziono w nim grzechu.

When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.
[Luke 3:21-22 NKJV]

Baptism in Jordan begins a new chapter in the activity of the Lord Jesus.
Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
[Luke 4:1 NKJV]
Water baptism often goes hand in hand with the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
[Acts 2:38 NKJV]
Other verses:

not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
[Titus 3:5 NKJV]

But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.
[Galatians 4:29 NKJV]

Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
[John 3:5 NKJV]

The Holy Spirit guides and confirms the identity of God’s children.

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
[Romans 8:1-16 NKJV]

THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever — the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
[John 14:15-18 NKJV]

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
[John 14:26 NKJV]

But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
[John 15:26 NKJV]

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.  And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
[John 16:7-8 NKJV]

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
[John 16:13-15 NKJV]

The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
[Isaiah 11:2 NKJV]

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
[Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV]

BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE BOOK OF ACTS

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
[Acts 1:4-5 NKJV]
People filled with the Holy Spirit began to speak in new tongues.

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
[Acts 2:1-4 NKJV]

Those filled with the Holy Spirit began to boldly proclaim God’s Word.

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
[Acts 4:31 NKJV]

Being a believer and baptized is not equal to having the Holy Spirit.

Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
[Acts 8:14-17 NKJV]

Again, people filled with the Holy Spirit began to speak in new tongues. Receiving the Holy Spirit was an obvious signal to Peter for water baptism.

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.
[Acts 10:44-48 NKJV]

Again, believers did not have the Holy Spirit and needed to receive it. On receipt, they spoke in new tongues and prophesied.

And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
[Acts 19:1-6 NKJV]

GIFT OF SPEAK IN TONGUES AND OTHER GIFTS

The gift of tongues and prophesying are a very common visible sign of receiving the Holy Spirit in the Bible. The gift of tongues serves, among others building oneself and communicating God’s message (if translated). It may be an existing language or an extinct language, but it is also a collection of syllables that do not resemble any language. Rather, the style of the languages is individual for each person. A person with the gift of tongues can most often pray with them when wants, and sometimes, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, they come and flow from the mouth in a supernatural way.

And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
[Mark 16:17 NKJV]

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.
[1 Cor 12:7-11 NKJV]

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification. But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?
[1 Cor 14:1-6 NKJV]

Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order.
[1 Cor 14:39 NKJV]

CAN A BELIEVER NOT HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT?

YES

And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
[Acts 19:1-6 NKJV]

Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
[Acts 8:14-17 NKJV]

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT?

Signs that can assure you of receiving the Holy Spirit:

  1. You have received the gift of tongues
  2. You prophesied by the Holy Spirit
  3. The Lord made you experience receiving the Holy Spirit in a different way that you understood.
  4. This has been confirmed by your own or other believers’ spiritual discernment.

I SUSPECT I HAVE NO HOLY SPIRIT - WHAT CAN I DO?

  1. Ask Lord Jesus for the Holy Spirit or a confirmation of His possession.
  2. Ask the Lord Jesus for the gift of tongues or prophesying.
  3. Go back to the basics of the gospel – faith, repentance, water baptism in the Lord Jesus.
  4. Ask fellow believers who have the Holy Spirit to pray baptism with the Holy Spirit, the gift of tongues, the gift of prophecy.
  5. Still nothing happens? Don’t blame yourself or get frustrated. Stay and seek God with all your strength! God is not an algorithm, nor a machine, he has his ways and times that we do not understand very often.
